Yoga Classes
Vinyasa Flow
Tuesdays 5:30- 6:30pm est
Vinyasa is a flowing style on yoga, common in most yoga studios. We integrate and coordinate our movements with the rhythm of our breath. Vinyasa can vary widely from one instructor to another. The style of instruction I strive for is to slow the pace of the breath as we flow from one pose to the next. The intention behind the pace is to create a meditative and integrated experience linking the physical body, our minds, and our emotions. The pace is also kept to a comfortable pace to allow new practitioners to yoga the time and space to follow along with the instruction, while also challenging advanced practitioners by extending the length of time needed to hold the pose.
Yin & Restorative
Wednesdays 7:00-8:00am est
Yin is a passive style of yoga, but that is not to be confused with easier. Yin is passive in the sense that the goal is to relax the muscles rather than engaging them as with vinyasa. By relaxing the muscles we allow the stretch to penetrate deeper in the body and target the tendons, ligaments and deep tissue fascia that holds the joints together. We accomplish this by setting ourselves into poses, often using props to support our bodies, and allow ourselves to relax and release. We let gravity and sometimes our the weight of our bodies do all the work for us. Since we are inviting the stretch deeper, we also hold the shapes for much longer (generally 4-6 minutes each). Sometimes these poses may feel uncomfortable to start and that is the “work” of yin yoga; to find comfort in the discomfort, to breathe and release with our exhales. This practice often has a restorative and relaxing sensation after the session. It is a wonderful complimentary practice to vinyasa or if one lives an active life.
For a impactful yin practice, it is very helpful to have access to yoga props. Typically in my classes I will incorporate a bolster, a set of yoga blocks and a blanket or two; a strap can also be useful. If you do not have yoga props, you may be able to find perfectly useable alternatives in your house. A body pillow or couch cushion may be used as a bolster, books or cans may be used as blocks, a belt or tie may serve as a strap, and any blanket is suitable for a class.
Vinyasa + Yoga Nidra
Thursdays 5:30-7:00pm est
Yoga nidra, also known as yoga sleep, is a deeply relaxing and restorative practice. While this style is yoga is restorative for the body and mind, it is deeply meditative in nature and exercises our concentration and awareness. In yoga nidra we take a comfortable relaxed position to the body and remain in stillness for the duration of the session. It is encouraged that we close our eyes and we invite our attention within ourselves. We practice in a quiet environment free from distractions where we can limit our senses to merely listening to the instructions given. I will guide our awareness within yourself, relaxing the mind and body, taking you to the brink of sleep. The challenge may be to stay alert enough to follow the voice as I spread your attention deep within the mind, setting intentions or planting seeds for change and transformation, move our attention around the body, connect with our breath, acknowledge our emotions and envisioning a better version of ourselves before gently guiding you back to awareness. You will arise on the other side of the practice feeling rested and refreshed as if you had taken a nap. The only effort required is a gentle concentration and awareness maintained through the session.
